The Auckland-Northland Branch covers quite a stretch of the upper North Island, from Cape Reinga in the north to Pukekohe in the South. We try to plan field days and get-togethers in a mix of locations, to keep travelling time to a minimum... though some very keen members don't seem to mind loading up the car at daybreak!
Events such as the AGM and our yearly social mid-winter lunch are generally held at a mid-way point, usually around the Warkworth area, so that as many members as possible can take part. Our mid-winter lunch has become quite a big hit and is almost guaranteed to produce a record turn-out.
Our members cover the whole spectrum, from lifestyle blockers close to Auckland City with a few pet sheep to serious farmers on large properties in more remote areas. Field days are varied accordingly, and cover topics useful for 'newbies', more technical sheep-related subjects, baling days and craft days. We also try to have one or two purely social outings each year.
Breeds kept include Merino, Polwarth, Romney, Perendale, Corriedale, Coopworth and Gotland. A number of our members are keen show people and we avoid too many field days around 'show time'. Interests include small businesses such as woolcarding, serious sheep breeding and judging, and even teddy bears. The majority of members have a well developed interest in wool craft.
A newsletter is sent out 6 times per year, and includes reports of past events, upcoming events, and all sorts of general items. There might be recipes, knitting patterns or the latest agricultural products, and even the odd bit of gossip!
We are always keen to see members from other branches at any of our outings and we welcome anyone interested in the BCSBA to come along and find out what it's all about.
